The fat and the lazy

The fat and the lazy

Some people are just fat and lazy. I know guys who couldn’t wait to get married just so they could get, well, fat and lazy.

There are lots of people like that. And I don’t feel very bad for them when their health falls apart.

But there are also people in who are fat who aren’t necessarily lazy. These people are in serious emotional pain.

Some people drink to mask the pain. Others shoot drugs.

There are people who work all the time to keep from feeling anything.

And there are people who go numb by eating. They eat and they eat and they eat rather than face life.

Last Wednesday I interviewed Dr. Christopher Mohr on many topics for our Prograde tele-seminar series. One of the things we covered was emotional eating.

Two things:

1- You may have clients who are emotional eaters. And while it’s very possible these people need professional treatment that neither you or I are qualified to give, it is important for you to be educated on the topic.

To do so Dr. Mohr recommends you read The Handbook of Obesity Treatment, by Wadden and Stunkard. You can easily find it on Amazon.com.

2- If you’re already a Prograde trainer and didn’t catch this information packed tele-seminar you can catch the replay. It’s posted in the resources section of your account.

Login here: https://www.getprograde.com/business_owners

Chris also covered:

- powerful behavior modification strategies for your clients

- how to wean clients off of fast food

- how to help your clients fight cravings

and so much more…

The moral of the story today:

Not everyone is just fat and lazy. Some people mask pain with food and it’s very important for us to remember that. We’re fitness professionals. I know I can be a real hard-a** so this is a reminder for me as well - to be more compassionate.

“Jim,
Just wanted to give you a quick heads up on the progress I’ve made with my camps since purchasing your Ultimate Boot Camp Product.

I started in March ‘06 with about 10 people attending. It’s steadily grown over the last 9 months with this month hitting 56 enrolled!!

It was your product that cemented the idea to start my own camps. I had no idea at the time that some initial guidance from the Ultimate BC CD’s and some marketing know how would amount to a such a successful business.

I want to thank you for providing that spark that ignited what this year will be a SIX-FIGURE boot camp business!!”

4 tips to improve your training…

4 tips to improve your training…

If you want any of my sales or marketing techniques to really work for you, you have to be great at what you do. And that means delivering results for clients time and time again.

Two guys can help you do that as well, if not better, than anyone else I know.Here are four tips from Mike Robertson and Eric Cressey to take yourexpertise to a higher level - where it needs to be.

Tip #1

One-sided back pain is almost always related to a lack of hip external rotation andhip extension range of motion. If your hip doesn’t externally sufficiently, you’ll compensateby rotating more at your lumbar spine. If you don’t have terminal hip extension (thanks to glutes that actually fire), you’ll compensate with lumbar hyperextension.

Extension-rotation syndromes are a good 80% of lower back problems. Work on hipmobility and stabilize the lumbar spine, and you’ll be golden. Aggressive soft tissue workwith the foam roller and lacrosse ball is useful on the TFL/IT band, quads, adductors, piriformis, and gluteus medius.
Tip #2

When performing a static postural assessment, you’re looking for 90 degree angles and straight lines. When the body starts to deviate from these guidelines, you open yourself upto pain and injury.This is much akin to the car with poor alignment; if you just drive it around the block at 20 miles per hour chances are you’ll be fine. But, the second you want to open it up and gofull throttle, things start to go out of whack and next thing you know you need a tune-up.Get your alignment straightened out and watch your health and performance soar!

Tip #3

Muscle imbalances around the lower leg can lead to a host of issues up the kinetic chain.Whether it’s something closely related like shin splints, or something farther away such as anterior knee pain, muscle imbalances around your lower leg aren’t a good thing.One of the simplest approaches here is to work on loosening up the gastroc-soleus with mobility and soft-tissue techniques, while strengthening the anterior musculature, most notablythe tibialis anterior with toe-raise exercises.It may not be as sexy as a big squat or deadlift, but improving the balance around yourlower leg will keep you healthy for a long-time to come!

Tip #4

Within the population, you’ll see three different types of acromion processes: Type I (flat),Type II (hooked), and Type III (beaked). Type III acromions only comprise one-third ofthe population, but account for the overwhelming majority of shoulder problems. The take-home message is that from structural standpoint, some lifters will “hold up” better tocertain potentially harmful shoulder movements (e.g., upright rows, overhead lifting).

I’ve said it from day one in the very beginning of the very first info-product I made forfitnesss pros: If you aren’t any good at what you do then I can’t help you. All of the sales, marketing and publicity strategies I teach are like putting a band aid on a compound fracture.It ain’t gonna help! Guys like Mike and Eric are able to take my “stuff” and turn it into BIG dollars because they are great at what they do.

So go look in a mirror right now and ask yourself: Just how good a fitness pro am I?

And if you’re not as good as these guys then get out your wallet and INVEST in their Building the Efficient Athlete program! Whether you work with athletes or the general pop you will benefit from it immensely. Don’t make the mistake of thinking it’s just for strength coaches.

It really is simple: The men and women who stay in this business and make a killer living at it because they invest in themselves constantly.

I love ya no matter what, but I hope for your sake you’re making the investments in the personyou need to love the most - YOU!

I have two very important messages for you today:

1- If you don’t watch fitness infomercials and you’re in the fitness industry, well, shame on you.

I don’t care at all what you think of them. What I do care about is how much they can help your marketing.

Check out the website for Slim in 6 and make it a habit it to use the powerful words and phrases that they do. Where do you think I came up with the subject line for this email?

http://Slimin6.com

2- My good friend Pat Rigsby wrote a newsletter recently that I consider a must-read. Actually, all of Pat’s stuff is must-read.

The Best Fitness DVD Ever

May 22, 2007 by jim · Leave a Comment

The Best Fitness DVD Ever

My friend Tony Reynolds has a kick a** DVD he just released. After watching it I told him
two things right away:

A - My list definitely needs to know about this killer resource.

You can find it here: http://www.1shoppingcart.com/app/?Clk=1967496

B - I want you to give me your three best tips for creating DVDs so I can share them with my incredibly loyal subscribers. So without further ado, here is Tony’s three top tips for creating your own kick a** DVDs!

1) Quality content, not production, is the most important factor in creating a profitable training video.

Granted, you do not want a sloppy product, but it does not have to be a Steven Spielberg production that costs a lot of money to produce. If you have sound content and can put together an exciting “presentation” just about any local wedding videographer can shoot and edit the video for you fairly cheap. Look in your local yellow pages and call around to find the best deal.

2) Create a thorough script for you training video.

Spending time planning before you shoot will save you hours of recording time and days of editing. If you are paying somebody else this will save you tons of m on ey. Have a rough idea of which angles you want to use for each exercise/activity and have a loose idea of the dialog correlated to your angles.

3) Convert your script to a high quality (digital) companion manual to sell with your video.

I was able to produce my kick a** 170+ page 3-D Strength Training manual in just a few hours. Video can be a priceless tool when you want to provide experiential learning, however you cannot take it to the gym with you. The manual can highlight the video and provide additional information that will boost your products valuewithout increasing reproduction and distribution costs.

And if you’re wondering just how kick a** Tony’s DVD came out, look at what the incomparable
Bill Hartman has to say about it…

“Tony, I’ve always said that you are the most creative strength and conditioning coach that I know. I think this DVD is going to be another “must have” for strength coaches or even the athletes who train themselves. The step-by-step breakdown of each movement that you’ve provided will allow anyone to use these principles effectively from day one. You’ve really hit on an powerful method to address a key component of training that makes a difference for all ground-based athletes.”

And I couldn’t agree more with Bill. I’ve seen a LOT of DVDs from fitness pros and the one thing that’s pretty much always missing is the step-by-step breakdown of each movement. You should have Tony’s 3D Strength Training as both a training reference AND the perfect example of what YOUR DVD should be like.

Yours in prosperity,

Jim Labadie

Do you have the guts?

May 21, 2007 by jim · Leave a Comment

It takes courage to live by a different set of rules. And as an entrepreneur you need to realize the the rules of the “ordinary” DO NOT apply to you.

For instance, many “ordinary” people, friends and family included, see my websites and don’t know what to make of them. They take a look at my sales copy or marketing strategies and roll their eyes.

How much do you think I care?

It’s funny because I also see them roll their eyes when I tell them I’m taking a day off because I feel like it. Or that I saw two movies that week in the middle of the day with my friend Ryan Lee.

If I didn’t have the courage to self-promote and use marketing strategies that actually work I would be stuck living by the rules of the “ordinary.” I’ve lived that life and I’ll tell you from experience - it sucks.

Being a SUCCESSFUL entrepreneur requires shameless self-promotion.
Being a SUCCESSFUL entrepreneur requires sales copy
Being a SUCCESSFUL entrepreneur requires powerful marketing systems
Being a SUCCESSFUL entrepreneur requires thinking the exact OPPOSITE
of how the “ordinary” think.

And all of these things take courage. So, if you need a shot of in the arm of some I can’t recommend my friend Barry Lovelace enough. His Clients are Everywhere program is mandatory listening for every fitness pro.

“Hands down, Barry Lovelace is the most energetic, enthusiastic fitness professional I’ve ever met. He has lots of tips and tidbits called “Barryism’s.” They are really actionable strategies you can take and use in your business”

What to tell them when the scale doesn’t move

May 18, 2007 by jim · Leave a Comment

What to tell them when the scale doesn’t move

I recently had the below asked of me by one of my subscribers. And in my infiite wisdon I let somebody much more qualified answer the question!

Here is the question and the answer from Dr. Chris Mohr of http://www.mohrresults.com:

~~~~
Q. - Quick question Jim, what’s the best way to explain to people the time it takes to start losing w e i g h t?
I can explain to people about the inches lost and improved muscle tone and strength that they get from the boot camps, however it takes the body around 8 weeks to show most of the result, as all the physiological changes are happening first.
Do you have a way you approach this if people despite the inch decrease and the greater strength, and endurance still have an issue with not losing much w e i g h t from 4 weeks of boot camp?
I always explain about how the human body works and people get it, however it is always good to have more ways to describe it to people!
A. - Ask them what the “magic” number on the scale means to them (e.g., if they want to be 150, how did they come up with that number). And say “do you think it’s possible to be perfectly happy with your body and NOT be that exact number or is your ONLY motivation for being doing this bootcamp to reach that number?”
It sounds like these people need to find what their motivation is—and it has to be intrinsic vs. an extrinsic motivation. YOU can’t motivate them–you can be a cheerleader for them, but if a number on a scale is the ONLY thing motivating them, they won’t be successful. It’s needs to be much more specifc.
If my goal was to get to 150, how would that keep me from going out wings and beer with friends on a Friday night? It wouldn’t.
Just like if my motivation was to decrease my risk for disease–that’s great, but it’s still not specific and individualized enough.
Have them determine a short term goal (wedding, reunion, etc) and some long term goals to continue to strive towards. And what if all their clothes fit, but the scale didn’t move–would they be happy? Hard for them to say no.
If you’re enrolled in the Prograde Nutrition program you can hear Dr. Mohr live on Wednesday, May 23rd at 8pm EST.
He’s going to reveal unique strategies every trainer MUST-KNOW to help their clients make positive nutritional changes on a daily basis!
Oh, and we’ve already lined up tele-seminars with Dr. John Berardi and the legendary Lou Schuler! But they’re ONLY for Prograde trainers and facilities.
Why in the world wouldn’t you join Prograde if nothing more than the incredible education we deliver for just $99?
I’m currently reading Dan Kennedy’s “No B.S. Wealth Attraction for Entrepreneurs” and I highly recommend it.
One of the most interesting chapters, to me anyway, covered a subject that I have written about in the past many, many times.
He talks about the damage toxic people play in the role of your business. And I assure you, Dan Kennedy has ZERO tolerance when it comes to anyone who is not going in the same direction as he is.
What about you? Have you fired those toxic clients that are killing you and your business yet?
In the book he explains how he once gave a full client refund of $70,000 just to get rid of the headache. And this is after he had worked on their account for several months.
I preach about this often because it is SOOO important. I can never stress to you enough times the point Dan Kennedy made. Every single person you come in contact with is either playing a positive or negative role in your life. They are either helping or hurting your chances of reaching your goals.
It’s true and you know it.
99 times out of 100
May 15, 2007 by jim · Leave a Comment
99 times out of 100
99 times out of 100 the business cards you give out end up in the trash.
Or if not in the trash then in someones desk drawer for a year. And a year later it goes in the trash when that desk drawer is cleaned.
Now this isn’t the case for all cards. But it’s pretty much always the case for the standard:
Your name
Company name
email
phone
…kinda card.
I’ve done a lot of networking in my day and I cannot even begin to tell you how many people would give me their card when I didn’t want it.
Some people would give me ten “just in case.”
Just in case what? My garbage can was lonely?
Just in case the thousand other useless business cards in one of my desk drawers wanted more friends?
Yes, there are times when business cards are handy.
Yes, there are times when they make for great marketing.
Yes, some cards are extremely creative and effective.
But here’s the deal:
Business cards for most every professional, fitness or otherwise, are a copout.
They are a way for so-called professionals to bail out of an uncomfortable situation. Instead of doing some prospecting and finding out if the person they are talking to might actually want to be a client they go limp and weakly say, “Here’s my card, give me a call and we’ll talk more.”
Hey, I’ve done that myself, I’ll admit it.
But I would never do it again.
Would you?
Do you know what to do next time you’re in that situation?
Or are you going to let another potential client slip through your hands?
Or perhaps you’re happy wasting your time talking to prospects who have zero interest in fitness because you don’t know the questions to ask, never mind the guts to ask them.
But go ahead, keep on doing what you’ve been doing. I’m sure your luck will magically change.
PS - Fellow fitness pro and former WNBA star Val Whiting is a believer. Are you?
“Even though I have not mastered the teachings of Jim’s Sales Kit and am very rusty, it works. I have messed up , bumbled, fumbled and still have gotten clients!
This system works even better with athletes and actually fits my style of thinking. As a professional athlete, I was extremely dedicated and focused. I expect no less from everyone else. I have made my mind up to train those type of people only. And if they are not with my “game plan” then, they are not a good fit for our program.
Not only has this system help increase our business, but has helped us save time.”
