Dominate Your Competition The Easy Way
I have to thank one of my subcribers for this idea.
So thanks to Matt Warren of Colorado for writing me the following quick note:
“Sometime you need to write an email about cheesy trainers who pose on their websites with their shirts off - total turnoff and creates a disconnect with the masses (not to mention the husbands who’s wives they hope to train)”
It immediately got me to thinking about a conversation I had with Nate Green recently. And in case you don’t remember, Nate is the 22 year old fitness entrepreneur phenom I wrote about last week.
Anyway, as Nate was talking about his astonishing success he was most amazed at something other than the results he had achieved.
Nate was amazed at how easy it was.
Now make no mistake, there was hard work, sacrifice and discipline involved.
But aren’t there lots of people who work long hours for little pay who work hard and sacrifice with no real light at the end of the tunnel?
Nate and his business partner Sam Glauber worked hard for awhile and are now reaping the benefits.
Again, a 22 year old fitness trainer who runs his own personal training studio with complete business systems was most amazed by how easy it was to create.
So getting back to Matt’s point about “cheesy” trainers.
How many of those do you know?
With so many knucklehads in this industry it’s actually incredibly easy to dominate your market.
And here’s something I want to point out to you. It needs to be clear as day.
If you spend more time b*itching and moaning about all those cheesy trainers and how they are ruining your profession than you do celebrating the fact they make it so easy for your to be successful…
…well, you’ve got some thinking to do.
Who loves ya?

You know who I am.
I can’t imagine you don’t know Pat Rigsby.
But there’s a good chance you don’t know the third member of the http://trainersinnercircle.com mentorship program.
So I had the man who “trims the fat” from fitness businesses write some tips for you to introduce you to the one and only Nick Berry.
It’s the type of information I don’t touch on nearly enough.

****
One of the lessons that far too many entrepreneurs, in any industry, learn too late (or never at all) is this:
It’s not how much you make, it’s how much you keep.
There are a ton of individuals and businesses out there whose revenues look incredible, but they aren’t making any money.
Well, the bottom line is the bottom line. And generating revenue is only part of the entrepreneurial battle.
Cost control is another major issue. It doesn’t really matter to me how much revenue you bring in, if you can’t manage to keep any of it, now does it?
There are an infinite number of ways you can go about controlling your costs and keeping more of what you’ve earned. I’ve outlined a couple of the concepts that I recommend to anyone who wants to ‘trim the fat’ from their business.
1) Want vs. Need
This is the simplest of formulas for controlling your costs.
Ask yourself one very simple question whenever deciding upon an expenditure:
How will my business be affected if I do/don’t do this?
It’s a simple matter of wants vs. needs.
Another example is an acquaintance of mine who started his own business.
When it came time to clean some of his floors, he went out and bought a mop, a mop bucket, soap, and some sponges.
He spent almost $60 on cleaning supplies - all of which were the highest end products.
You can go buy a mop, bucket, soap and sponges for under $25. He WANTED a rolling mop bucket and wringer, he NEEDED a bucket that would hold water.
I understand cheap products don’t last as long, but if you overspend on items when it’s just not necessary, YOUR BUSINESS won’t last long.
This is not a ‘Cleaning Supplies Theory’, this is a 100% time tested business principle. You cannot overspend on everything and expect to have a highly profitable business. It’s impossible.
2) Time Management
It’s very cliché, but yes, time is money.
Therefore you’ve got to be as thrifty with your time as you are with your money.
When you are inefficient in task execution, minutes turn into hours, hours into days, and so on.
How often do you take 30 minutes to complete a 10 minute task? Your phone rings, you check your email (or your Fantasy Football Team), or any other numerous speedbumps that slow your productivity.
You are stealing time from your business. And if you have employees who are inefficient, they are stealing time from your business.
One of the most effective time management exercises I do for myself, when I feel like I’m not executing as many highly productive tasks as I’d like, only takes an extra 3 or 4 minutes a day.
Take a sheet of paper or small notepad and pen, and keep it with you.
All day long, every minute of your day is dedicated to some task. For example:
7:45-8:15 workout
8:15-8:40 meet w/ Pat and Holly
8:40-9:20 go to office, open mail, check email 9:30-10:30 AP reports and bookkeeping with CPA
10:30-10:43 Mgmt conference call
Get the idea?
But don’t lie to yourself. If from 9:20-9:32 you didn’t really do anything, then make sure you keep track of that.
By the end of the day you’ll know just how effectively you’re really managing your time.

The Secret To More Success
September 26, 2007 by jim · Leave a Comment
Yesterday I wrote about Warren Buffett.
And yesterday I had a fitness pro write me back that Mr. Buffett wasn’t leaving any loot for his kids.
This trainer didn’t seem too happy about it.
Now I have no idea if that is true or not.
Meaning, if Mr. Buffett is leaving an inheritance or not to his children.
It’s none of my business.
And while I write a lot of personal stuff, I don’t think I’d ever presume to tell you that you should or should not leave an inheritance for your children.
It’s really none of my business.
But what I do find interesting is the sense of entitlement that people have.
I’m not about to say I’m 100% immune from it myself.
Still, it’s pretty insane how people feel they are entitled to things.
If Warren Buffet doesn’t want to leave any of his fortune to his kids then so be it.
His kids are responsible for their own lives.
Just as I’m responsible for mine.
And you are responsible for yours.
It reminds me of an email exchange I had with my friend Kevin Gianni not so long ago.
Kevin’s business has literally exploded - in a positve way - over the last few months.
He has met some of the most amazing people as a result.
Some of which he is partnering with on exciting new projects that blow me away every time I think about them.
What really stood out for me was when Kevin wrote that the day he took 100% responsibility for EVERYTHING in his life is when his outrageous success truly began.
It’s one of the hardest things to do, but when you really get that concept is when everything changes.
And everything changes for the better.
Oh, and I’m guessing if you’re one of Warren Buffet’s kids you’ve learned a thing or two about financial responsibility along the way.
Again, that’s just a guess.

What Would Warren Buffett Do?
September 25, 2007 by jim · Leave a Comment
Sunday night I watched a CNBC program on the second wealthiest man in the world.
Warren Buffet was asked what advice he gives to children and teenagers about becoming a financial success.
He said he tells them two things:
1- Stay away from credit cards
2- Invest in themselves
So how much stock do YOU put in the advice of the second wealthiest man on earth?
And if you haven’t been following the first part of his advice and have gotten yourself into a little trouble, well, acting on the second part is how you dig out of the hole.

PS- My partners in the http://www.trainersinnercircle.com/ consult to the conultants!
“In the past, the three keys to a successful business were location, location, location. Well, in today’s business world there are six keys to a successful business: location, location, location, systems, systems, systems.
Unfortunately for me, I was missing systems entirely. I have a strong business model, decent cash flow, tons of desire and strong work ethic…I just ended up spinning my wheels and feeling like I was never productive enough. I would look back on a day and even a week and think to myself, “What did I really get accomplished?”
Well along come Pat Rigsby and Nick Berry. I thought I was going to teach them a thing or two about the health club business, but what ended up happening was they pointed out so many obvious and even more not-so-obvious things that I was missing in my own business. They showed me how many upselling and profit center opportunities I was missing, and even provided steps I could take to begin capitalizing on this easy muney. They even helped evaluate my current pricing model and found that I was severely undercharging my clients!
So long story short, with the advice that they provided me, for just one of our profit centers we have increased revenues from around 2,500/month to just under 11,000/month. Another of our profit centers, an online training service, we have now doubled our monthly earnings…and it’s all automated!
And while an increase in revenue is nice, the most important thing that came from Pat and Nick were the systems that they helped implement.
I love what I do, but I was getting burned out working until the wee hours of the morning and falling asleep with jumbled thoughts in my head, unsure of what I needed to do first the following morning. I literally was spending 100 hours a week either working, thinking about working, or worrying about working every week. Now I focus on a regular set schedule, and I get more done in 40 hours than I ever did in 100.
If I didn’t fear boring you, I could talk forever about the great things Pat and Nick have done for my businesses. From the bottom of my heart I thank you for showing me how to work “on” my business rather than “in” my business.”
Sincerely,
Curtis Mock, President

Oftentimes the things we can do to save time are staring us right in the face.
Many times I find myself answering the same questions over and over and over…
Not smart.

Another thing he told me is…
September 24, 2007 by jim · Leave a Comment
On Thursday I shared the story of 22 year old fitness phenom Nate Green.
Another thing he told me is how astonished people in their thirties and fourties are when he tells them about himself.
According to Nate most of them are in complete shock.
Which brings us to today’s big questions:
How comfortable are you with success?
Meaning, are you comfortable being the man or woman amongst your friends and family who has complete freedom?
Will you be able to handle it?
Will you feel guilty?
Perhaps you say you wouldn’t feel guilty, but thanks to how you were raised you’ve got a subconscious belief trying to hold you back?
What are your friends and family going to say if you work half the hours they do and make twice - or more - what they make?
Will you be shunned?
Will they be p@issed at you?
Will they be truly happy for you?
Do you think you deserve to live such a life?
Do you feel like you haven’t yet paid your dues?
Take some time this weekend to reflect on those questions.
Meditate on them if you like.
Ask them to yourself out loud and then go for a workout. Let your subconscious answer them while you’re exercising.
Let me know what you come up with.
And if I see you enrolled for the http://trainersinnercircle.com/ mentorship I’ll know you’re ready for the prosperity that is your birthright.

WHOA! 22 Year Old Fitness Phenom
September 20, 2007 by jim · Leave a Comment
On Monday I wrote about a video I was going to show you of a super successful 21 year old fitness pro.
I need to apologize because he is MUCH older than I thought.
His name is Nate Grean and he’s all of 22 years old. Not 21 like I thought.
Nate’s business partner, who I also know, Sam Glauber is the senior citizen in their company at the ripe old age of 24.
They’ve recently opened Emerge Fitness Solutions in a major ski-resort town in Montana.
Sam’s going on vacation to Hawaii and Nate’s headed to Belize for a few weeks of relaxation.
Because of the systems they have in place their business will be just fine without them.
If you’d like to be even more amazed I suggest watching this video real quick. Be careful your jaw doesn’t hit the floor when you hear how many hours they work each week.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wmUAlQ_cS78
So how old are you?
How are your dreams coming along?
Still insisting on doing things the hard way?
Still worried the http://trainersinnercircle.com might not be everything we say it is because you found a typo in our copy?
Does it p*ss the he** out of you to see two young guys enjoying life so much while you suffer and slave through another day?
Hmmm.
I wonder what YOUR answers to those questions are.
I wonder if you’ll be a part of the http://trainersinnercircle.com and join guys like Nate and Sam on the beach.
It’s your life.
I still love ya.

Send Your Critics Straight to…
September 18, 2007 by jim · Leave a Comment
Today’s lesson is simple:
There is a time and place for everything.
The more your name gets “out there” the more the critics are going to blast you.
It’s the nature of the beast, my friend.
And while I don’t normally advise getting caught up in those negative vibes, there is one time it does make sense to mix it up.
If a “big name” person starts shooting their mouth off feel free to start some controversy.
Controversy marketing definitely works.
And the best part is, these morons who think they are doing you harm are doing you a world of good.
They’re giving you a ton of exporuse on the house!
If your information is solid and you do right by people what do you have to lose?
For the most part, nothing.
But you still need to be careful when you stir things up. I’m NOT advising you to go stepping on people’s toes just to get people to notice you.
And I’m certainly not telling you to go shooting your mouth off for no reason at all.
Just recently a former “big name” in the fitness industry got himself in a mess of trouble on the internet for calling out another big name.
He didn’t realize the overwhelming support would be AGAINST him.
The internet is the great equalizer, and this old-timer didn’t realize the trouble he was creating for himself.
Controversy works. But make sure you’re on the right side of it or you’re in for a world of hurt.

Raising Money for Alzheimer’s Disease

The more successful you become the bigger your responsibility to give back. While the media would like you to believe rich people are evil, most of the time it’s just not the case. People who believe in true prosperity give back in a big way.
I could go on and on about the topic, but the message it pretty simple. The more you give the more you get. And the more you get the more you give. I’ve said it a million times: Life is easy when you let it be.
That being written, a fellow fitness pro could use your help. I’ve already made my donation. Please be sure to help if you can.
The Deciding Factor
September 17, 2007 by jim · Leave a Comment
I was recently asked a question that went something like this:
“The women who join my club want to work with a female trainer and I don’t have enough on my staff to go around. What do I do?”
My answer:
“The question you should be asking yourself is, “Why wouldn’t I hire more female personal trainers?” It’s not easy to know how much you are losing in personal training revenue by only having two female personal trainers on staff, but, I’m guessing it’s a significant amount.
Something else to consider is to move to semi-private training. Having the female trainers you currently have on staff train three or four clients at once makes the most sense. It is more cost-effective for the client, and the small group setting is more fun and encourages social support. Also, it allows you and the personal trainer to earn more per hour. Everyone wins.”
While my answer may seem more than obvious to most, it isn’t really what I want to share with you.
No, I want to share with you The Deciding Factor.
And that is the fact that THE MARKET DECIDES
Your gut doesn’t decide. Your best guess doesn’t decide. Your opinion doesn’t decide. Your ego doesn’t decide.
The Market Decides
And if you don’t like it, well, too freakin’ bad.
Did that person really need to ask that question?
What was it that kept them from seeing the obvious.
It could be any number of things. I’m not going to get into belief systems and everything else, but there are deep-seated issues at the root.
The main problem being their failure to let the open market dictate what it wants.
If your female members want female trainers then give them female trainers.
I’m sure the male ones you have on staff are terrific.
I’m guessing they’re great at what they do.
But if the market decides they want women instead, well, you need to supply women.
And that’s what is so funny about all the anonymous posters on personal training forums and blogs.
They fail to see the obvious: The open market decides what sells and what does not.
If a product or service sucks it is going to fail.
The open market will decide what amount it goes for.
And that leads me to my next point…
It never ceases to amaze me the short-sighted personal trainers out there who love to attack the entrepreneurial fitness pros with ambition.
It amazes me how some trainers with twenty years of experience are so jealous of others with barely any experience - who by the way are still really great at getting clients reults - because they’ve invested in their business education and have already surpassed them financially.
Sour, sour grapes.
Instead of getting their 73rd certification they should have been learning about how to run a business.
But nah, they’d rather be wearing their Victim of Honor medals at the latest fitness seminar complaining about all those inexperienced guys who are making all that loot.
They love crying over the fact a trainer with a fraction of their experience is already more successful than them.
“Oh, all they want is to worship the almighty dollar!”, they moan.
“Whoa is me! Here I am with all these certifications and all these years in the trenches suffereing and I’m broke.”
“Boo hoo hoo. Please feel bad for me”, they post on the forums.
Then the group think of the weak-minded really begins.
So the cry goes out, “There must be someone we can blame for our failures!”
“Yes, yes, let’s blame the people who have created all these successes!”
I could go on and on with my little story, but I’m sure you get the idea.
Sometime this week I’m going to share a video testimonial from a 21 year old fitness pro who owns his own studio. He delivers big-time results for his clients. He is the consumate pro in every way you can imagine.
And he only works about 20 hours a week.
Can you hear the b*tching and moaning from the grizzly fitness industry veterans?
It drives them crazy that someone so young can be so good at what he does, work less than them and make more green.
Sour, sour grapes.
Trust me: People don’t give a rat’s a** about you. They care about what you’re going to do for them.
The open market decides. Your wounded pride has nothing to do with it.
But don’t worry, no matter what side of the fence you sit on I still love ya.
Yours in prosperity,
Jim Labadie
