Personal Trainers And American Idol
Ok, I’ll admit it: Carol and I were watching the new season of American Idol the other night.
I’ll tell ya, when I’m at work I’m often going a million miles per hour. Lately watching the dumbest stuff on TV I can is about the only way I can get myself to slow down.
Anyway, I realize that many people are trying out just to get on TV. They are fully aware they have no chance of making it.
But others are completely delusional.
If you’ve seen the show you know what I’m talking about.
They’re shocked they aren’t “going to Hollywood.”
And that reminded me of personal trainers.
I hear from lots of my successful customers who tell me about the trainers they USED TO work with.
The same trainers that told my customer they were crazy for even thinking of listening to me.
The same trainers who are barely making $30K working for someone else.
The same trainers who are scratching their heads wondering how they are going to make a living as a personal trainer.
The same trainers who refuse to invest in their business education.
The same trainers who refuse to use marketing that works.
The same trainers who think being a great “technical” personal trainer will bring in all the clients they can handle.
The same trainers who laugh at those who have sprung the 99 measly bucks for my http://howtoprofitwithbootcamps.com/ kit.
Many of my customers are climbing well over the six-figure mark while those “other” trainers are complaining on the internet forums about guys like me.
I’m not perfect.

But I’m not delusional.
What about you?
Even if you are, I’ll still love ya.

PS- How many trainers are passing you by? How many of my customers are already way ahead of you? How long are you going to wait before you go after your dreams?
“What can I say about Jim’s materials?
I’ll tell you this - Labadie really understands the ‘inner game’ of sales and marketing. I wrote the book on starting and running a martial arts school, and I’ve also purchased a ton of business training materials over the years… I can honestly say that Jim Labadie stands head and shoulders above his peers in a very crowded field.
If you’re a personal trainer who wants to learn how to get more clients, or a martial artist who wants to learn some valuable sales tips from a fitness pro, do yourself a favor - study Jim’s materials!”

I’m VERY excited.
VERY.
I was on the phone with Pat Rigsby yesterday and we started to shape the outline of a new program that is going to raise the bar on everything for those of you who train adults.
I’m thinking it will be ready this fall.
It’s going to require you to have a LOT of skin in the game.
It’s going to be for those of you who have a burning desire to succeed.
We’ve gotten to the point where it is time to reward the most ambitious by delivering to them much more than a business.
We’re taking it up ten notches.
This fall we will see the Cream of the Crop rise to the top in a whole new way.
I’m VERY excited. You should be, too.

Yours in prosperity,
Jim Labadie

We really need to talk

I’ve got a very good friend who doesn’t like to talk about moolah.
He’s a great husband.
He’s a great dad.
He’s a great friend.
But when the subject of making moolah comes up he gets very uncomfortable.
I wish it weren’t the case because, while it isn’t the only thing to talk about, it’s very important to discuss.
You can literally FEEL his negative belief system towards the green stuff.
And many people are like this.
It doesn’t make them bad people. Not at all.
But it does keep them buried in debt and living on a very tight budget.
Certainly not the end of the world.
Yet just a slight change in his perception of the subject would make all the difference in his financial situation.
He could be much more financially secure.
He could spend more time with his two little girls.
He wouldn’t have to stress if there was enough to make ends meet.
The school system certainly isn’t going to be any help in educating his daughters on the subject.

Moolah is important. It’s not THE MOST important. Not close. But it is important.

Get comfortable with it. Talk about it. Discuss it. How to attract it. How to KEEP it. How to make it work FOR you.
It’s all so much easier than we make it out to be.

I have a good friend in Tampa who I need to tell you about. I’ve given this person a ton of different ideas on how to improve their small business. Because they are a friend and I love to talk about this stuff I always offer it at no cost.
But do they ever take my advice? No.
And one of the reasons is, as per usual, because it hasn’t cost them anything. But that is only one side of the story in this case. I’ve been told by this person the reason they haven’t taken any action on my ideas is because they are a perfectionist. It’s this person’s belief that they would literally drive themselves nuts because the info product I told them to create would NEVER be good enough for them to make public.
Well, I think they’re a bit nuts, but at least they’re honest.
Nothing you ever do is going to be perfect. Much more importantly, it doesn’t have to be. People get so paralyzed trying to make every little detail exactly like they want it they never actually accomplish anything. And of course that means they never actually make any moolah.
Perfectionism is one of the greatest - and most underappreciated - forms of self-sabotage. I know so many trainers who are working on the same project forever. It just needs this or that to get it just right. Well, that’s what they claim.

There’s never going to be a perfect time to do something.
There’s never going to be a perfect info-product.
Your website is never going to look perfect.
But on the positive side, I am hearing more and more and more from trainers about the action they are taking.

They are writing articles.
They are landing speaking engagements.
They are contacting the media.
They are making their website live and making changes AS THEY GO.
They are constantly marketing their boot camps.
They are actively educating their clients about referrals.
Take action, take action, take action.
If you’ve been taking action please let me know. Let me know what’s going on in your world. Let me know how you have been taking action and the results you have seen because of it.

Your most valuable asset
April 9, 2008 by jim · Leave a Comment
Oftentimes, we learn by doing.
But you can learn from others, of course.
“Jim,
In one of your email’s “the velvet rope,” you strongly suggested that we don’t meet with prospective client’s who have not called for an appointment themselves.
I should have heeded your advice.
A man approached me at the gym and said his wife needed a trainer. She finally called me after I sent two email’s and left one phone message.
We met, I went through the whole system that I learned from your program. She agreed with everything however; she forgot her checkbook.
I had a feeling right from the start that she was not a good prospect. We agreed to meet at the gym on Sunday at 8 am. She called at 7:15 am and canceled.
I learned first hand to place that velvet rope around myself. I will not waste time again meeting with a prospect client whose spouse wants them to get in shape.”

If I could easily get a hold of Warren Buffett to pick his brain about making moolah, well, I’d do pretty much whatever he told me to do.
A buddy of mine from high school works with a trainer in North Jersey. He’s a young guy who is supposedly ambitious. And he went to the same high school as my friend and I did.
So when my friend asked me to help this guy out I thought it would be pretty cool to show the ropes to a fellow Wayne Valley High School grad.
I emailed this young trainer with some initial steps to take. One of the steps included spending a whopping ten bucks for some world-class Business of Personal Training info.
Ten freakin’ bux.
That was about a month ago. He hasn’t done one thing I told him to do. According to my friend he would like to speak to me before he lays out the ten bux.
Pathetic.
I’m completely disgusted by this.
In fact, just thinking about it pisses me off to no end.
My friend Nate Green took out a loan just so he could have the moolah to make it to the Ryan Lee Boot Camp a few years ago.
Yeah, that’s right, he took out a loan.
Now THAT is ambition.
Where’s Nate now?
He owns his own studio with so many systems in place that he only works there part time. He’s 22 years old.
I’m not Warren Buffett.

So let’s see how ambitious YOU are.

I did a simple “Sorry this was late” Christmas card a couple days after Christmas to all of my clients and prospects from 2007. I ended up with 3 prospects buying PT and 4 clients came back and bought some more training.
So a $75 investment turned into about $2000 worth of PT sales! So the SOC is very VERY useful. No one will argue with a 2600% ROI!

“I typically retain about 60% of my boot camp clients each month, and I thought that was pretty good. But still, I’m always anxious about getting the enrollment up each month with new members. It can be a bit nerve wracking.
Last month I sent out a “picture plus” thank you card that I created. I composed a personalized message and ended it with a sentence asking them to continue the work they started.
Well, I got a 90% retention! There’s no way that’s a coincidence. I’m a believer in this system, and so should you!

“Before using Send Out Cards I was hand writing around 100 “Thank you,” “Happy Birthday,” “Just a reminder,” and “We miss you,” cards per week.
Our business depends a lot on referrals, so consistently making contact with our members and clients is necessity.
Now with SOC in my arsenal, all I need to do is enter in contact info and the system takes care of the rest. This system has allowed me to almost double the amount of time spent working ON my business.”

Easier Than You Think

I had a 15 minute conversation with Jason. It took just 15 minutes to prepare him for the business opportunity of a lifetime. He was meeting in a couple of days with a pro sports team and he wanted my help landing the deal.
It’s funny how we love to make things out to be so much harder than they really are. I know I used to be scared to death of the mere thought of having to sell something. That was for other people. It certainly wasn’t for a nice guy like me. I was a fitness professional, I wasn’t supposed to sell stuff. I was just supposed to help people.
But here I was years later having a conversation with a fellow trainer who had hundreds of thousands of dollars on the table. Could I help him close it? Was my system that powerful? Was it simple enough?
Well, during that 15 minute conversation I told Jason one little trick that would set the tone for the entire meeting. I didn’t give him a bunch of scripts. I didn’t give him any checklists. I told him the one thing to say that would close the deal before everyone at the table had a chance to take a sip of coffee.

“I have been a personal trainer for the last 5 years at several corporate gyms. You know, the gyms where you do the dreaded floor shifts and spend endless hours meeting with new members, giving them a free orientation of the gym and then it’s your chance to sell training. Over the years I got really good at it and always had the highest sales averaging $5,000 a month.
Recently I bought Jim Labadie’s Ultimate Sales Kit hoping it would improve my current sales, although since I was always the top producer I wasn’t sure if it would help me much…
After going through his simple to follow sales system it all become crystal clear, the secret to getting people to buy training is asking the right questions and let them sell themselves. This last month I sold $15,000 in training in a corporate gym which is unheard of, that is just something nobody does especially when the training sessions are $61 an hour in a small town that all the other gyms sell training for $30 and sell about $8,000 in training with 10 trainers.
Thank you Jim, you gave me the confidence to start my own training studio and leave the corporate world since you have helped me master the sales system.”
