I was interviewed on Monday about some of the biggest mistakes trainers make as business owners.

In case you didn’t know, it’s not just trainers that make these mistakes. It’s most small business owners.

One of the biggest is the almost complete disregard people have for their own time.

The mistake? Not having a plan in place to protect yours like a pile of gold brick from the very start.

I harp about this a lot because it’s so flippin’ important.

You can buy more of pretty much anything when it comes to business.

Heck, with the right marketing and PR you can pretty much buy credibility.

But you can’t buy back time gone by.

Bottom line: Time is your most precious commodity. It’s so cliche because it’s so true.

Why 6 figure trainers succeed

At least every couple of months a trainer comes to me with a Business of Personal Training product they are creating.

It’s a generic how to make moolah kind of product that doesn’t really have any shot of being worth their time.

The key word being GENERIC.

When Ryan Lee started doing this stuff he came from a place of uniqueness. He brought the power of the Internet and info products to the personal training industry.

A Hard Lesson Learned

I love sharing emails I get from fellow fitness pros.

This is a great one from Rocco Castellano:

“Jim,

I wanted to write you in hopes that you would pass along to your subscribers a little lesson I learn from being too nice.

I have a reputation for being a hard ass both in business and in training. I make a high 6 figure income and love what I do…this is where the lesson comes from.

Because I have been blessed with a fabulous life I thought I should give back a little to the community and offer my Boot Camp Workouts for an inexpensive price of $35.00 a month and help people get fit.

The reality of the situation was that I had 150 people join up and it went well for several months but then all of a sudden participants started dropping like flies.

I didn’t understand what was going on until I took a survey of the 150 participants and found out that it was easy to skip because they didn’t have enough invested. I couldn’t keep them on track.

I kept the diehard ROCCO fans and workout freaks but the average boot campers would go missing for a month or so.

Then it hit me in the head like a sledge hammer. Raise the price of the Boot Camp.

So, I raised the price of the Boot camp and of course most of the people that screwed around complained about the price hike and quit. Which I knew would happen…

…here is what I wanted to share…

I had no problem getting new customers willing to pay the new higher price and the great thing about it was I had no problem with attrition. All the boot campers had a fair investment in their health and great workout to go along with it.

Not pretty, but super effective

In April of 2005 Ryan Lee, Debbie Cohen and I put on our overnight seminar called Fitness Prosperity.

And even though it was about 2:00 in the morning we still had a woman near the front row complain that she doesn’t like long sales copy.

It’s not the first time we’d heard it.

I just heard about it again from a reader the other day.

According to her I’d have a better shot of selling something to her without it.

While I’d love to have her as a customer, I’d much rather have the thousands of others that have read my copy and actually made a purchase from me.

And I guess it doesn’t bother women that much because Jayon Hunter and I are selling the crap out of our http://CarbRotationDiet.com program and 73% of our customers are women.

It’s really simple.

I’m never going to tell you a long sales letter site it pretty.

But I am going to tell you they work. And they work really, really well.

They always have and they always will.

The fight is getting fierce

With the relaunch of http://PersonalTrainerU.com and the incredible buzz on the forum, one thing became more clear to me than ever.
Trainers everywhere are wanting to start boot camps and get into info products.
And as I’ve written before, competition is very much REAL.
If you’ve been THINKING about doing something you’d better realize you need to get your a@@ in gear and get to work.
Because all that stuff you’ve been putting off until tomorrow, well, it’s going to come back to bite you in that a@@ of yours if you don’t.

Well, bad things happen to good people.

But those same people take action to make things better.

Dear Jim,

Today, I need your help in a big way. Let me explain and please read this entire letter even though it’s a bit long.

As you know, two years ago my wife Patty died from pancreatic cancer. This is the most devastating form of cancer.

And although we had only four years together ours was a marriage that can only be described as a true, love story.

When you were at my house recently in Boca we talked a bit about Patty. I really wish you’d had the chance to meet her. She was an inspiration to almost anyone who knew her.

Patty flew airplanes. She rode the backs of elephants in Africa. She canoed the far reaches of Thailand.

She even traced her mothers’ family roots to Japan. Even though her life was cut short it was a well-lived, passionate life.

Patty taught me much about embracing every day and to smile no matter what.

In fact, her life and sadly her untimely death inspired and changed the life path for many of her close friends. In particular was her friend Lisa Young.

Lisa had a nice corporate job but deep down inside her was an artist screaming to be let out. Merely days before Patty died Lisa and I sat at Patty’s bedside.

Lisa was describing what Patty’s life had represented in comparison to her own. And now, with her best friend only days away from death she had made a decision.

She was going to start living the way Patty had lived - fearless, happy, passionate.

First, Lisa was going to leave her corporate job and paint full time (become a real artist she said).

Second, her first paintings were to be for a design of cards that she wanted to sell and donate all of the money to charity. Do good works and honor her best friend Patty.

Incredibly Lisa and I sat there while this beautiful, dying woman selected the logo that would go on the back of these cards.

In her last days Patty was eloquent, elegant and never once desperate.

We talked about how the logo would be used. She compared colors and designs. She was as clear and precise as if she’d be here forever.

And it was there that day Jim that the roots for what would become the Patty Boshell Pancreatic Cancer Foundation www.pancreaticcure.org were put down.

We didn’t know it yet but this was going to be a big deal.

Patty died 5 days later.

Shortly afterward and with the help of some incredible people the organization came together. The Patty Boshell Pancreatic Cancer Foundation www.pancreaticcure.org is now two years old.

I’m happy to say that in our short existence we’ve raised enough money to get the attention of one of the nations largest and most active non-profit organizations. That organization is the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PanCAN).

And now, we have committed to working with them and others to wipe out this killer disease.

For 2008 and beyond Patty’s foundation will underwrite several research grants known as career development, research merit awards.

The awards are organized by PanCAN and are for $100,000 each.

They are judged under the strict guidelines of the American Association of Cancer Research. Awards go only to scientists who devote 100% of their time to the study of pancreas cancer.

You probably don’t know it but pancreatic cancer is the 4th leading cause of cancer death in the U.S.

Yet this deadliest of cancers receives only about one-tenth the (less than any other) funding for research as the others.

Jim, in the next 12 months 37,000 people will be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

In the 12 months that follow that diagnosis 34,000 will be dead.

The rest will die in less than five years. Yes, for now at least, this diagnosis is tantamount to a death sentence.

I’ve recently been and will return to Capital Hill to lobby for better research funding.

Yet, the real difference is going to be made by ordinary people getting involved and doing extraordinary things.

We need a grass roots effort to raise the voice of advocacy for the families and victims this terrible disease strikes each year.

We need research for early detection, treatment, and prevention. Research costs money.

That is why we, the members of Patty’s foundation have made such a large monetary commitment with the merit awards. But we need to go further.

This year, we plan to raise $1,000,000 to benefit pancreatic cancer research.

We can only do it with your help and the help of others.

Jim, what I’m asking you to help us do is this. Help us get this message out and with it the opportunity to make a real difference in peoples lives.

Our goal is to have 1 million people see this message and the message posted at:

On a hot August day down in South Florida last summer I was talking about business innovations with a friend of mine.

We were relaxing on his back porch drinking a beer when the the conversation turned to the Internet.

“All those guys making billyuns on the Internet are just lucky,” he said.

I just smiled.

“Well, there might be some to it. But the real key is innovation,” I replied. “Some people follow the trends. Others create them.”

I’m not too sure my buddy liked my thinking. Most people would much rather believe wealthy people got lucky. I guess it helps them sleep at night.

I think you can look at it one of two ways:

1 - Be like most people and resent the “lucky” innovators.

2 - Congratulate the innovators on their success and aspire to achieve the same level of wealth through mutual benefit and integrity.

I choose option #2.
