Another time waster exposed

I had just gotten done giving a presentation to a group of women in Tampa when one of the attendees came up to me.

“So, sell me on this newsletter of yours”, she said.

As per usual, about half way through my presentation I passed around a sign up sheet for my e-newsletter.

Pretty much everyone who was interested in looking better naked would sign up without hesitation. It didn’t cost them anything. They liked what I had to say so far. Pretty simple, really.

But not this woman. It was 9:00 at night. It had been a real long day. The person who booked me for the talk gave me lousy directions and I had gotten lost on the way there.

I was NOT in the mood to try and “sell” someone on a free newsltter.

So as I was briskly making my way out the door, because I knew this would be a complete waste of time, I asked her, “Ummm, I don’t know. Why would you sign up for it?”

“That’s your job,” she said. “You need to sell me on why I should read this thing.”

End of conversation.

I’m not a used car salesman.

Neither are you.

I can sell someone thousands of bux worth of personal training in fifteen minutes.

But no amount of trying to convince this woman was worth the time.

If she isn’t willing to sign up for a free newsletter how the hell am I going to sell her training?

Thing is, she was a sales “professional” of some sort. But not a very good one.

How can I tell after talking to her for 60 seconds?

Easy.

She wanted to beat me up over this newsletter the same way her prospects and customers walk all over her.

It’s what she was used to. It’s what most people who try and sell stuff are used to.

The difference was I know better than to waste my time trying to sell something to someone who doesn’t want it.

Neither should you.

My girlfriend Carol is a psychotherapist. She has her own practice here in South Florida. Actually, we met because she works in the same executive suite complex that Ryan Lee and I do.

Lately we’ve been working on getting a blog set up for her, so last night we started on her very first post.

After we ate dinner I told her, “Ok, it’s time to create some content. Tonight we’re writing your first blog post.”

To which she replied, “Huh? I’m not ready to do that. I need to think about it.”

You can guess how well that went over with me.

So I just kinda smiled and said, “Your blog is for single women looking for the perfect man. If there was only ONE piece of advice you could give a woman reading this blog, what would it be?”

She thought about it for 5 seconds and came up with her answer.

And that answer was her first blog post.

Within 15 minutes we had a list of about 20 more future blog posts.

Her life will never be the same. It has now been changed for the better FOREVER.

And it took 15 minutes.

Your future really does depend on this

It’s a little difficult to convey through a text email how serious I am about this question.

What happens if your clients dry up?

Meaning, even with a great marketing plan and consistent leads there is always the chance clients just stop coming.

Well, for one thing you should have all of them on long-term contracts.

But you should also be creating multiple streams of income.

It’s one of the reasons I harp on boot camps over and over and over and over…

Training groups allows you a so much more free time to create other revenue streams.

And multiple revenue streams pick up the slack when one of them isn’t doing so great.

With more free time you could focus on:

- Creating info products and really learning how to make moolah online

- Or maybe learn all about Real Estate investing. And don’t give me that crap about the housing market. People who know what they are doing - I’m not saying I’m one of them right now - make tons of dough in all kinds of markets.

- Or maybe a REPUTABLE network marketing company like Send Out Cards. (more on this soon)

- Or maybe your spouse or even kids has an amazing talent or knowledge you could capitalize on.

There are SOOO many ways to make moolah.

Yes, you need to follow your heart and what you are passionate about.

But you also - I believe - want to strive for true financial freedom and security.

Be smart. Think smart. Do smart.

Tiny Marketing Huge Response

Years ago, when I lived in Tampa, I was a member of a networking group called CABA. They used to have regular meetings on Wednesdays that I would go to. For the most part, I was the only personal trainer at them.

That was until the day the stereotypical trainers arrived.

I would always go dressed like a professional. And as a trainer living in Tampa that meant Kaki pants and a collared shirt with my company logo.

So you can imagine how thrilled I was when I came to this one particular meeting and saw two trainers there from a local studio who were half naked. Spandex. Tank tops. Looked like they had just finished working out. The whole nine yards.

Now I had been coming to these events for months. I was very well known in the group. And so it was no surprise that most everyone came up to me at some point during the meeting and started to tell me just how shocked they were to see these “professionals” dressed like this at one of our meetings.

I could go on and on and on about this type of behavior in our profession. But that’s not the major point of this email. I know I’m preaching to the choir about professionalism.

But I did want to emphasize to you just how important all the LITTLE things are. In fact, every little thing you do can be considered marketing.

- The way you say hello to people

- The way you carry yourself when you walk

- The way you sit

- The way you eat

- The enthusiasm and passion you either do or do not convey

- The cleanliness of your studio

- The pictures on the walls

- The shine on your shoes

- The small gestures of appreciation you show your clients

- The thank you cards you send

- The extra mile you go

- The time you show up for appointments

None of these things go unnoticed. NONE.

You are a living, breathing piece of marketing.

And by the way, a little extra advice for you today on networking meetings. Each time you go to one you need to have a goal in mind. And personally, I think the smartest move is to go seeking Public Speaking Engagements.

The people you meet at these events are almost always a member of another group. And most groups need speakers. Plus, a lot of them work for companies where you can speak to their employees during lunch.
