The Missing Referral Link

Referrals are the lifeblood of any business.

But it is particularly true for personal trainers.

Just turning your clients into “walking, talking billboards” is not enough to create an endless stream of referrals.

It is very simple, however.

By following the FIVE simple tips below you will tap into the power of your contacts to increase your revenues with very little cost.

1) Realize that everyone you know is a potential referrer.

There is not a single person you know who cannot be educated on how to identify and send you a potential client. So make a list of every single person you can think of. And them think some more. Family members, friends, neighbors, hair stylists, networking associates, current and past clients, financial planners, doctors, lawyers…it’s endless.

2) Educate them on what a referral looks like. Let them know exactly who your perfect client is.

Is it a man or a woman? How old are they? What are their goals? What type of programs and products has your perfect client typically tried before they thought of hiring a trainer?

The more you educate the referrer about what to look for, the more potential clients they can send your way.

3) Never, ever assume.

Don’t ever assume people already know who your perfect client is. That is a recipe for disaster. While they will be more than happy to help you, the reality is people are far too busy to know everything that is going on with your business.

4) Educate referrers on where to find potential clients for you.

Remind them that it could be anybody. It could be their family, friends, neighbors, etc. And it’s also wise to list out places where these people could be found. It might be someone where they work, or someone they know from their softball team, or a parent from their child’s school.

Again, it’s endless. And the more ideas you give them about where to look for this perfect client of yours, the more likely they are to remember someone who fits the bill.

If you rely on one source of income you’re potentially screwed.
Do you have any idea how many trainers I hear from who tell me they get ‘killed’ in August when their affluent clients leave on extended vacations and don’t come in for training.
Yet again, that is why I am a firm believe in Boot Camps.
By training groups you can make much more in less time.
You then use that extra time to create multiple streams of income.
- Work on building your autoship supplement sales into your business
- Create a SYSTEM for selling your info products
- You could start a Send Out Cards business on the side
- Make a program for traveling clients so when they leave for vacation you continue to service them and make moolah
You also use that extra time to learn everything you can about business, sales, marketing, publicity…
I’ll say it till the cows come home:
THINK like a business owner NOT a personal trainer.

I got up at 4:20 today - yes, am - to hop on a plane for NYC.

I love hearing from my readers. It really makes my day when someone takes the time to reach out and write me a short note in reply to one of these newsletters. Who doesn’t like to feel appreciated? So to all of you who have written me to tell me how much you like these constant emails of mine, THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart.

Here’s two quick tokens of appreciation from ME to YOU. The other day I wrote about video testimonials. Two things I forgot to mention:

1- Numbers don’t lie. So be sure to use specific numbers in testimonials whenever possible.

“I dropped 20 pounds.”

“I’ve gone down three dress sizes.”

“I lost four inches from my waist.”

2- If you have trouble getting testimonials from clients then write them FOR them. Yes, you need to tell the truth. Yes, you need to show it to them for their approval before using it. But hey, if they won’t do it then take the initiative and do it for them. It beats the alternative.

Ok, back to tokens of appreciation for a moment. Businesses are built on relationships. Relationships with:

Clients
Prospects
Strategic Partners
Journalists
Employees
Vendors
And on and on and on…

How often do you show them YOUR appreciation? What are you doing to strengthen your relationships with them? This question is for me as much as it is you. If we want great businesses we need to have great relationships.

Use Your Passion

The other day I did a coaching session with a fitness pro who has a different personality than mine. He didn’t feel comfortable saying things the way I say them in http://www.howtogetmoreclients.com/

When I get passionate and worked up about something I tend to get very serious and a bit in your face. I don’t intend it to be mean or offensive in anyway.

It is meant to get people to take action and better themselves.

One of my favorite things to tell people, because it is effective and 100% true, is I won’t take on anyone as a client who I think will make me look bad. I only work with those who will do what it takes to succeed. Period.

The coaching client felt the same way, but felt very uncomfortable saying it the way I say it.

Again, that’s perfectly ok with me and I’m glad he told me.

Why?

Because he has to be himself. If he tries to sell without using his genuine personality his prospect will literally, I believe, “feel” something is “off”, and he will blow his sale.

So that’s why we changed the same premise around so he could say basically the same thing in his own “voice”.

We came up with something like this:

“If you aren’t serious about this then I simply will not allow you to waste your money. I won’t take it.

This is going to take hard work and discipline and if you aren’t ready to commit to that then I really don’t want to see you waste your money.”

There’s a better way to sell personal training. It’s a whole lot easier than you think. PLUS, you can do it with complete honesty and integrity.
