First Strategy For Retaining Clients

I don’t know of any fitness business that doesn’t want to retain its clients.

Pretty obvious, right?

Well, since most businesses do a lousy job of it, I guess it isn’t so obvious.

One day I asked the legendary Alwyn Cosgrove his strategy for retaining clients.

His answer:

“Clients make the decision to renew in the first 30 days, regardless of how long they signed up for.

So the key is customer service in the first 30 days, and “front-
loading” the training programs so that they get GREAT results in the beginning.”

I think the most important part of his answer is “in the first 30 days, REGARDLESS of how long they signed up for.”

A Deadly Myth

The other day one of my customers emailed me with a serious concern.

“Hi Jim,

I bought your http://HowToGetMoreClients.com package awhile ago and love it. I’ve gotten several new clients using your techniques. Right now, I am basically indentured to a local chain club.

On to my real question. Is it possible for a Trainer (me) who has no 4 year degree, but does have the appropriate certifications and a drive to succeed and make money, to have a 6 figure income? Is this possible? Is it common? Would a degree be necessary? Or is this something that’s just “nice” but not required?”

Shoot, there are rich people who can’t even read.

But they sure can dream BIG. And I’ll bet dollars to doughnuts they own at least one business - if not several.

The educational system in the United States creates employees.

And employees help business owners get rich.

I’m NOT suggesting that education isn’t important, but it is a Deadly Myth to think getting a 4 year degree is the key to financial freedom.

To think going to college and getting a good paying job is the path to financial security is just dead wrong.

I highly recommend creating boot camp businesses because they allow personal trainers the time to learn about financial freedom.

If you can earn in just one hour what would normally take you three hours of one-on-one training…or four…or five…well, do you have any idea how much you can learn about building wealth during the hours you WOULD HAVE spent training clients one-on-one?

Time Sweet Time

At any given time I’m making my way through a handful of books. Right now I’m reading one about Real Estate Investing, one about protecting your assets via corporations and one on Pay Per Click marketing. I like to read a couple pages here, couple pages there. I like to take my time. In fact, I like to make my life as stress free as possible.

About now you’re thinking, “Come on, Labadie, who doesn’t want their life easy?”

Well, from the trainers I speak to, not many, actually.

Sure, they may say they want things easier. But who cares what people say. I’m much more interested in what they do. I want to know if they’re outsourcing simple tasks or leveraging their time.

Here’s just some of the things I delegate/outsource:

As expected, my ‘Ranting and Raving’ email ruffled some feathers yesterday. Not many people like to be called lazy. Fat people don’t. Broke trainers don’t either.

Interestingly I heard from quite a few people OUTSIDE of the industry who were none too happy with me. Apparently laziness is not one of the main factors - in their opinion - why the people of this nation are so friggin’ fat.

The cries came forth:

“We need to motivate the people. We need to find a way to inspire them.”

I couldn’t agree more.

How about this for motivation:

- You’re so fat you can’t tie your own shoes

- You’re so fat you can’t walk a flight of stairs without feeling like you’re going to have a heart attack

- You’ve put yourself at serious risk of having a heart attack because you’re so fat

- You’ve got a serious chance of becoming a diabetic because you’re so fat

- Your kids may not have a parent because you might die young because you’re so fat

My girlfriend is a psychotherapist. She has worked in hospitals where you will see some of the saddest things you can imagine. And she’ll gladly tell you the same thing: You cannot help people who do not want to be helped.

Have you ever heard of Seminar High?

That’s where you go to some kind of educational or motivational seminar for a day or a weekend and get all pumped up. I’ve been to many. I’ve spoken at many.

Do you know how long that euphoric feeling lasts? Do you know what happens to the grand plans of most people after being motivated like hell all weekend?

Well, some people really do what they say they are going to do. They take action and the start kicking some serious butt. These people are motivated from within.

Other people - MOST people - do nothing. They get home, turn the TV back on and go numb watching the latest on Britney, Brad and Angelina.

Whether you want to be healthy, or wealthy, or both, you’re going to have to work. And you’re going to have to work hard.

Your motivation comes from within.

Is it going to be a LOT harder for some people than others? Yes. Yes, it’s going to be a LOT harder for some than others.

Do people deserve all the love and encouragement we can possibly give them? Yes, they do.

Can we do it for them? Nope.

I’m a very blessed guy. I say thanks everyday for all I have. And a lot of people read my emails for inspiration. I’m grateful to be able to give it to them. But my readers and customers who go places, the ones who move in the direction of their dreams, are always motivated from within.

I’ve got to come clean.

I feel the need to confess.

I’m an addict.

If there’s one thing I could consider myself addicted to it’s Email.

I’m not sure how it happened or when.

But it did.

And the first thing is to admit I have a problem.

I have been checking it way too often for far too long.

So I’m testing something out.

I’m only checking emails on Mondays and Fridays.

Not exactly what Timothy Ferriss recommends in The Four Hour Work Week, but it’s a start.

So far, so good.

I feel a HUGE burden lifted from me.

It is amazing how refreshed I feel.

And I’m already much more productive.

Not only am I getting more work done, but it has also helped me pinpoint areas where I can delegate more.

Please understand, I’m not taking this lightly at all.

Once you get caught up in email it blows your whole day. At least that’s what it does to mine.

We’re all addicted to something. Just because it isn’t drugs or alcohol doesn’t mean it isn’t an addiction.

It might not be lethal like a drug or alcohol addiction.

BUT if something is interfering with the pursuit of your dreams then you better believe it’s a SERIOUS issue.

So your first homework assignment for 2008 is to search your soul and find something negative you are addicted to.

You might be addicted to CONTROL and not willing to delegate because of it.

You might be addicted to FEAR and don’t act because of it.

You might be addicted to ONE-ON-ONE TRAINING and refuse to earn more while working less because of it.

You might be addicted to FEELINGS OF UNWORTHINESS and not leading as prosperous a life as you could because of it.

You might be addicted to ENERGY VAMPIRES without even knowing it. And because of it you’re so used to having the life sucked out of you by negative clients you don’t even notice it anymore.

The first step is admitting you have a problem. I ain’t kidding.

JL: Adam, you’re my customer already, so obviously you’re a VERY bright guy ;-) My advice to you is simple.

First thing to know is others in your club will probably duplicate your strategy as soon as they see the results you get.

But that should never stop you.

Second, you can’t do enough speaking and writing.

You should have simple “how to” articles on subjects your members want to read about all over the club.

And make sure you’re writing for the correct target market.

They are SOOO easy to write.

- Catchy headline

- Intro paragraph explaining a problem

If you’re in business for yourself you need to be incorporated.

It’s not just for the tax benefits. Though you’d be certifiable not to take advantage of them.

No, the big one is for the legal protection.

God forbid you get sued they sue your corporation, not you personally.

That means keeping track of corporate meetings and minutes.

Yes, they are necessary to MAINTAIN the legal protection of a corporation.
